4. Ứng dụng IELTS crime vocabulary vào Speaking

Speaking Part 1 – Crime and Safety

Question 1: Do you think your neighbourhood is safe?

Yes, I think my neighbourhood is relatively safe. There are regular police patrols, and most residents know one another. However, I believe improving public awareness and security measures would make the area even safer.

  • Từ vựng nổi bật:
  • Relatively safe: Tương đối an toàn.
  • Police patrols: Các hoạt động tuần tra của cảnh sát.
  • Public awareness: Nhận thức cộng đồng.
  • Security measures: Biện pháp an ninh.

Question 2: Have you ever witnessed a crime?

Fortunately, I have never witnessed a serious crime. However, I once saw someone stealing a bicycle. I think people should report suspicious activities to the police rather than trying to take the law into their own hands.

Từ vựng nổi bật:

  • Witness a crime: Chứng kiến tội phạm.
  • Suspicious activities: Hoạt động đáng ngờ.
  • Report something to the police: Báo cáo việc gì với cảnh sát.
  • Take the law into one’s own hands: Tự ý thực thi công lý.

Question 3: Do you think crime is a serious problem in your country?

I believe crime is a concern in certain areas, particularly cybercrime and online fraud. These offences can cause financial loss and emotional distress. Therefore, raising public awareness and strengthening law enforcement are important.

Từ vựng nổi bật:

  • Cybercrime: Tội phạm mạng.
  • Online fraud: Gian lận trực tuyến.
  • Financial loss: Thiệt hại tài chính.
  • Emotional distress: Đau khổ về tinh thần.
  • Strengthen law enforcement: Tăng cường thực thi pháp luật.

Speaking Part 2 – Describe a crime-related story you heard about

Cue card:

Describe a crime-related story you heard about.

You should say:

  • What the story was about
  • Where you heard it
  • Who was involved
  • And explain how you felt about it.

Sample Answer:

I would like to talk about a news story involving an online fraud case that I heard about a few months ago.

According to the report, several people had lost substantial amounts of money after being deceived by an online scam. The perpetrators used fake websites and misleading messages to obtain victims’ personal information.

What surprised me most was how sophisticated the scam was. Many victims believed the website was legitimate, so they did not realise they were being targeted until it was too late.

I felt deeply concerned because online fraud can affect people from all walks of life. It can result in significant financial loss and emotional distress. I also think this case highlights the importance of public awareness and stronger security measures.

In my opinion, authorities should invest more in cybercrime prevention and encourage people to report suspicious activities. Individuals should also be more cautious when sharing personal information online.

Từ vựng nổi bật:

  • Online fraud: Gian lận trực tuyến.
  • Perpetrator: Người gây ra hành vi phạm tội.
  • Fake website: Trang web giả mạo.
  • Misleading message: Tin nhắn gây hiểu lầm.
  • Personal information: Thông tin cá nhân.
  • Financial loss: Thiệt hại tài chính.
  • Cybercrime prevention: Phòng chống tội phạm mạng.
  • Suspicious activities: Hoạt động đáng ngờ.

Speaking Part 3 – Crime and Society

Question 1: What are the main causes of crime?

I believe crime is caused by a combination of socioeconomic and personal factors. Poverty, unemployment and social inequality may create financial pressure, while peer pressure and a lack of educational opportunities can influence young people’s behaviour. However, these factors do not automatically lead to criminal activity, so prevention policies should consider individual circumstances.

Question 2: Should criminals be punished or rehabilitated?

In my opinion, the criminal justice system should balance punishment with rehabilitation. Serious offences may require appropriate penalties to protect society and deter potential offenders. Nevertheless, rehabilitation programmes and vocational training can help former prisoners reintegrate into society and prevent reoffending.

Question 3: How can governments reduce crime rates?

Governments should adopt a comprehensive approach. They can improve access to education, create employment opportunities and address social inequality. At the same time, effective law enforcement and community-based crime prevention programmes are necessary to protect public safety.

Question 4: Do you think prisons are effective in reducing crime?

Prisons can protect society by keeping dangerous offenders away from the public. However, imprisonment alone may not address the underlying causes of crime. If prisoners do not receive education, vocational training or psychological support, they may struggle to reintegrate into society after release.

Question 5: Should young offenders receive the same punishment as adults?

I do not think young offenders should always receive the same punishment as adults. Young people may have less developed judgement and can be more vulnerable to peer pressure. In appropriate cases, education, counselling and rehabilitation may be more effective than severe punishment, although serious offences still need to be handled carefully.

Dạng 1: Causes and solutions

Crime rates are increasing in many cities. What are the causes of this problem, and what measures can be taken to address it?

Dạng 2: Punishment versus rehabilitation

Some people believe that criminals should receive longer prison sentences, while others argue that rehabilitation is more effective. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Dạng 3: Young offenders

Some people think young offenders should be punished in the same way as adults. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Writing Task 2 paragraph

Đề bài:

Some people believe that longer prison sentences are the best way to reduce crime. Others think that education and rehabilitation are more effective. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Answer:

Some people argue that longer prison sentences are an effective way to reduce crime because they can deter potential offenders and protect the public from dangerous individuals. By imposing harsher penalties, governments may demonstrate that criminal behaviour has serious consequences. However, imprisonment alone may not address the underlying causes of crime, such as poverty, unemployment and a lack of educational opportunities. In my view, rehabilitation and prevention should receive greater attention. Providing prisoners with education and vocational training can improve their employment prospects after release and help them reintegrate into society. Therefore, a balanced criminal justice system should combine appropriate punishment with effective rehabilitation programmes.
