a) Agree/disagree

1. Some people think spoken communication is more powerful than written communication. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

2. Some people believe that reading stories from a book is better than watching TV or playing computer games for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

3. Some people think news has no real connection to people’s lives, so reading newspapers or watching news programmes on television is a waste of time. Do you agree or disagree?

4. Watching a live performance such as a play, concert, or sporting event is more enjoyable than watching the same event on television. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

5. Environmental protection is the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as individuals can do very little. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

6. The government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizens’ health rather than on protecting the environment. Do you agree or disagree?

7. Nowadays, women, as well as men, work full time. Therefore, women and men should share household tasks equally. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

8. It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn the culture of other people. We can learn just as much from books, films and the Internet. Do you agree or disagree?

9. Some people think the qualities a person needs to become successful in today’s world cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

10. Young people today spend too much money and time following fashion trends. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

11. As a part of education, students should spend a period of time living in another country to learn its language and culture. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

12. Employers nowadays put more emphasis on social skills. Some people believe that social skills are important in addition to good qualifications for job success. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

13. Some people think the money spent on developing technology for space exploration is not justified. However, there are more beneficial ways to spend this money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

14. The most essential component of a person’s life is his or her time at working place, and life turns meaningless once no job satisfaction is obtained. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

15. Some educationalists say that every child should be taught how to play a musical instrument. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

16. Internet technology means people do not need to travel to foreign countries to understand how others live. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

17. People say that it is a waste of time for high school students to learn literature such as novels and poems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

18. Some people think that outdoor activities are more beneficial for children’s development than playing computer games. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

19. Some people argue that individuals’ freedom should be in accordance with laws and rules, otherwise, society cannot function as it should be. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

20. To succeed in a business, one needs to know maths. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

21. It is more important to spend public money on promoting a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent illnesses than to spend it on the treatment of people who are already ill. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

22. Some people believe that a country will benefit greatly if its students study abroad. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

23. Restoration of old buildings in main cities involves enormous government expenditure. It would be more beneficial to spend this money to build new houses and roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

24. The use of mobile phones should be banned in public places like libraries and shops. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

25. It is a natural process for animal species to become extinct (e.g. dinosaur, dodo…) There is no reason why people should try to prevent this from happening. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

26. It is important for all towns and cities to have large public outdoor places like squares and parks. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

27. Many people believe that scientific research should be carried out and controlled by governments rather than private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

28. Schools are no longer needed because children can find so much information on the Internet and study at home. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

29. Large companies use sports events to promote their products. Some people think it has a negative impact on sports. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

b) Positive/negative development

1. Nowadays it is not only large companies that can make films. Digital technology enables anyone to produce films. Is it a positive or negative development?

2. Advertisements are becoming more and more common in everyday life. Is it a positive or negative development?

3. Today many countries import food from different parts of the world. Is this a positive or negative development?

4. Some people store personal and private information online, including banking, contacts, and addresses. Is it a positive or negative development?

5. Nowadays more tasks at home and work are being performed by robots. Is this a negative or positive development?
